School of Japanese Karate – Shotokan International - Grading Requirements – For 9th kyu

Beginner (white belt) and 10th kyu (white + orange stripe) grading to 9th kyu (Orange Belt)

1st Table: Kihon (basic moves)

Moving into Gedan-barai (low level block in forward / front stance)

1) Moving forward 4 times Oi-zuki (straight punch) Jodan (head level).  Kiai on last punch

2) Moving back 4 times Age-uke (upward rising block).  Kiai on last block

3) Moving forward 4 times Oi-zuki (straight punch) Chudan (middle level).  Kiai on last punch

4) Moving back 4 times Soto-ude-uke (outside to inside forearm block).  Kiai on last block

5) Moving forward 4 times Uchi-ude-uke (inside to outside forearm block).  Kiai on last block

6) Moving back 4 times Uchi-ude-uke (inside to outside forearm block).  Kiai on last block

Yame (stop)

Moving into Zenkutsu Dachi (forward / front stance with both arms outstretched to the side)

7) Moving forward 3 times Mae-geri (front kick) Chudan (middle level) Kiai on last kick  -  Turn

8) Moving forward 3 times Mae-geri (front kick) Jodan (head level) Kiai on last kick  -  Turn

Yame (stop)

2nd Table: Sanbon Kumite (3 step sparring)

3 step Oi-zuki Jodan with your partner

who will block Age-uke and counter with a punch & Kiai to your chudan after their last block

Both partners attack and block

3 step Oi-zuki Chudan with your partner

who will block Soto-ude-uke and counter with a punch & Kiai to your chudan after their last block

Both partners attack and block
