The Japanese counting system generally used is:

1 -  ichi,   2 - ni,   3 - san,   4 - shi,   5 - go,   6 - roku,   7 - shichi,   8 - hachi,   9 - ku,   10 - jyu,   11 - jyu ichi,   12 - jyu ni  and so on.


 


Karate Katas are learned in the following sequence:

Taikyoku shodan (first cause), then the five heian katas (peaceful mind), then tekki kata, bassai dai, kankudai, jion, jitte, hangetsu, jiin, nijushiho, meikyo, sochin. There are many more kata, including the lesser forms (sho) of bassai and kanku.



Eventually, with patience and dedication, all students can achieve the coveted black belt.

This is the beginning of true learning of karate and the black belt can continue to move on to higher Dan grades.
