Young Dragons
The 8 Young Dragon skill requirements are composed of physical and mental benefits. The following are the skills with the benefits from participating in the "Young Dragon" class:
Skill 1: FOCUS -- This will help your child's aim, listening skills and reaction skills. They will excel faster in any physical activity- your child will also become a better listener and a more focused student in school.
Skill 2: TEAMWORK -- Teamwork is necessary for any young child to develop. The more confident your child is willing to work with others, the more he or she will accomplish. Your child will develop character, which will help him or her make new friends and become a better leader in life.
Skill 3: CONTROL -- Having control means making good decisions. Whether your child is handling a pet or handling a problem, he or she will learn to make the right decisions. Control builds confidence.
Skill 4: BALANCE -- This skill is crucial to develop at an early age. Your child is beginning to participate in many physical activities that are challenging. Your child will develop good balance and a better posture.
Skill 5: MEMORY -- Developing a good memory is exercise for your child's brain. The sooner your child exercises, the smarter he or she will become. Our training will constantly help your child think and make good decisions.
Skill 6: DISCIPLINE -- Our instructors use the Young Dragon training to help create the vision that discipline is fun and rewarding. Your child will take pride in doing the right thing. Your child will also follow directions better.
Skill 7: FITNESS -- It is important for children to understand the importance of being healthy and physically fit. If your child does not burn off excess energy exercising, how will he or she burn off all of that energy?
Skill 8: CO-ORDINATION -- Your child will learn left from right. They will become better physical participants in sports and activities. The better co-ordination your child has, the fewer injuries your child will sustain.
In our Young Dragon classes, we make learning fun and educational. Our goal is to help your child be the best they can be at everything they put their minds to. Our motto is "Young Dragons" today, leaders tomorrow

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
Let's now have a look at Parent's most frequently asked questions relating to "The Young Dragons" Karate:
Shotokan Karate in Enfield
Q: What is the earliest age my child can begin training with the Young Dragons Karate?
A: As a good rule of thumb, the average age I believe a child should begin training is 6 years in our Enfield/North London Karate venues. But under the right circumstances and with the correct teaching a child can benefit from our type of karate training at an earlier age.
If little Billy seems to want to get into some form of activity, and, as a parent, you'd like to sharpen some of the motor skills while he's still too young for Karate, I'd be inclined to introduce the child to Swimming. This will produce many of the same physical results, and would serve as a reasonable preparatory activity that will assist Karate when the child is old enough to begin training and it will not be load-bearing on the bones and joints at too early an age.

Q:
I have a 14 year old boy who seems to be a little uncoordinated and self-conscious. Does that mean he'd be no good for the "Young Dragons" Karate?A:
Quite the contrary in fact. This is quite normal. When a boy reaches that crucial hormonal minefield between 11 and 16, the most obvious sign that things are changing will be a spurt of physical growth.
As this growth is mainly skeletal, his motor-skills, however impressive they were before, will take a bit of a downturn at this time. That's because the skeleton will grow faster than the motor-skills will be able to adapt to the physical change. They will eventually catch up but here's the good news..."Young Dragons" Karate training throughout this period will assist in a number of ways.
It will sharpen those motor-skills and accelerate that "catch-up" process. It will assist in the development of those muscles that begin to take shape during this time. It will assist in maintaining the youthful flexibility of the joints while the growth occurs. Most of all, it provides an excellent understanding of the affects of the chemical changes occurring, which lead to feelings of anxiety, confusion, aggression that are associated with this period, which will help your "young man" maintain control and self-esteem. Of course, there's also the friendly environment where a young-adult can feel he belongs, and be himself with total comfort.
Q:
I want my daughter to learn to defend herself but my first thoughts of Karate are very "Gung-Ho". Will she sacrifice her femininity in order to protect herself?A: Certainly Martial Arts are portrayed in Hollywood and on T.V. as merely ways for people to beat each other up. Like most things in the movies, that's all fake and couldn't be further from the truth
Have no fear! Girls remain very petite with the "Young Dragons" Karate while they learn to pack a wallop, when necessary.

Q:
I've tried numerous activities and sports my children show an interest in but they never stick to anything. What if I spend all the money on gear and they don't like it?A:
I won't lie to you, Karate is not for absolutely everyone. It's a personal choice. What I recommend is that you and your child go along and watch a " Young Dragons" karate class in progress first. If your child likes it, by all means join in and just wear loose trousers and t-shirt for the first month. If after a month of dedicated attendance your child is still enthusiastic, you're on a winner and you can go ahead and buy the uniform. The uniform (Gi) will probably serve to fuel the fire and make them want to keep it up once they look the part.
If you want a really valuable tip, why not begin Karate with your child? There's no restriction on skill, size, shape or age.
Q:
Is there a chance my child could get hurt doing "Young Dragons" Karate?A:
There are far higher incidents of injury in soccer, rugby, basketball, cycling, skating, and hockey than Karate. To put your mind at ease, we practice "Non-Contact" Karate in Enfield. That is to say, there are no "strikes" or "blows" delivered greater than "touch-only" to the body, and none at all to the head or neck area. We teach "control" in all defence situations and when there's any risk of contact occurring during an activity, we use specially designed protective gear to be extra sure there's little chance of an injury.

Q:
My child needs lots of encouragement and a feeling of either "achievement" or "Advancement" to go on. How does your "Young Dragons" Karate deal with these needs?A: The grading and advancement policies of each karate club in Enfield differs slightly from place to place. There is also the development speed of the individual to be considered.
Essentially, we understand the importance of the child's development, and how praise and reward nourishes them as much as the training itself.
The requirements for each grading are very realistic and can easily be achieved by any student, provided they keep up the attendance and the practice.
To safeguard against a student's hopes or expectations being squashed, a "Young Dragons" Instructor will carefully monitor the progress of each student individually during each training period (usually 3 to 4 months between gradings). During this time, the Instructor will easily identify any potential shortfall of the students requirements, and work with them to ensure they'll be ready for their next grading. Only those students who are truly capable of passing the examination or assessment will be invited to attend.
We are more than happy to answer any questions you may have regarding your own training, or your children's training at any time.

We can help your child settle into his or her new school now! |

Have you done everything you can to prepare your children for school this year? You’ve probably bought the items on the list of supplies, bought some new school clothes and taken them to the school’s open day to meet the teachers and find their ways. There is still one more thing you can do to help you children have a successful year, however. Enrol your children in a School of Japanese Karate martial arts class.
SJK martial arts training is so much more than kicking, screaming and breaking boards. Training in SJK martial arts teaches emotional control, sportsmanship, focus and discipline. As we all know as parents, there are so many influences out there that go against these characteristics we need to do everything we can to teach them to our own children.
Class Structure. When you enrol your children in to a SJK martial arts class, they will enter a disciplined class that will require them to respect their instructor, their fellow students and themselves. The respect demanded at a School of Japanese Karate martial arts training will teach your children to respect their teachers, classmates and even school property even when they are not in their martial arts class because it naturally carries over into other aspects of their lives such as school work, team sports and classroom behaviour. Instructors at the SJK school will teach your children that all people, especially adults, deserve respect. You’ll probably even find your children’s teachers telling you that their classroom demeanour is improving as a result of our training.
Focus. Training at the School of Japanese Karate is not a mindless activity. To keep themselves safe from injuries, participants need to have complete concentration and focus at all times during training. This ability to concentrate will carry over to other parts of your children’s lives, even school. They will become more aware of their surroundings and will be less likely to “zone out” during the school day. They’ll have improved focus and concentration that will help them during school lessons, while doing homework and even when studying and taking exams.
Confidence. Another characteristic that all children need to succeed in school is confidence. Our classes can help increase your children’s confidence by giving them the knowledge they need to defend themselves not only physically, but mentally as well. They will be strong enough to not become victims of bullying from schoolmates and will have the ability to stay calm in stressful and potentially harmful situations by teaching them how to handle stress without losing their temper or simply becoming flustered.
Stress Reduction. You know that life can be stressful and you probably already know that physical exercise is a great stress reliever. Your children, even in the younger primary grades, may also be experiencing daily stress. It’s no wonder with the rigors of school requiring them to do a many hours of homework each week. Giving them an outlet for physical activity, such as SJK martial arts, can help them reduce their stress levels. While you might just encourage them to join different sports teams throughout the year,SJK martial arts takes stress relief one step further by giving them a well-rounded type of relief. When they are at SJK martial arts classes, your children will be concentrating on their training, not dwelling on their problems and the things they need to do. They won’t be worrying and stressing out about an upcoming test or about their friends. They will be focusing their mind on something productive (both mentally and physically) and will feel better all-around when they are done with their class.
Preparing your child for a successful school year requires so much more than school shopping and getting them out the door that first day. Help them learn how to help themselves by giving them the tools they need to respect others, focus on school, exude confidence and reduce their stress levels. Enroll them in a School of Japanese Karate martial arts class today.
